St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel: Tour Details

From the privileged meeting point of Piazza Pio XII, 5, your guide will first take you to the stunning St. Peter’s Basilica. After an introduction on the “architectural” history of the Basilica, you will be taken inside, where you will discover works of absolute beauty such as the famous Pieta by Michelangelo. You will admire the magnificent mosaic reproductions of great artists such as Raphael, and you will see the world-renown Baldachin, a monumental canopy created by Bernini between 1624 and 1633. Every single corner of the Basilica has so much history to tell, so many anecdotes and oddities that you can discover by listening carefully to what your guide tells you…an example? Just ask about the statue of Saint Longinus, kept in one of the niches of the Basilica…

Once the tour of the Basilica is over, you will be escorted outside and invited to take a break of about 15 minutes, after which you will reach the Vatican Museums. Your exclusive tour ticket will let you to skip the line at the entrance and – after the usual security checks – you will be escorted into the very heart of the City of Vatican, where priceless works of art from all over the world are hosted.

Thanks to the explanations of our guide, you will be able to deeply understand the historical, artistic and cultural context that has molded the priceless treasures enshrined within the walls of the many different museums and galleries that make up the entire Vatican complex, including:

  • The Hall of the Muses
  • The Pio-Clementino Museum
  • The Gallery of Maps
  • The magnificent Courtyard of the Pinecone, opening into the very heart of the City of Vatican.
  • The guided tour of the Vatican Museums will reach its peak with a visit to the Sistine Chapel. We would like to remind all visitors that it is forbidden to take photographs and videos inside the Sistine Chapel and that it is not permitted to speak out loud: your guide will therefore deliver all the explanations outside, using the special illustrative panels provided by the Museums.
  • Once inside, you can lose yourself in contemplation of what represents the highest point of Italian Renaissance painting, including Michelangelo’s extraordinary cycle of the vault and Last Judgement.

The Vatican Museums were established by Pope Julius II in 1506 starting from a single statue, the marble group of Laocoon.
A self-portrait by Michelangelo can be found in the Sistine Chapel, more precisely in the Last Judgement: Buonarroti reproduced his features in the skin that St Bartholomew holds in his hands.
All the conclaves which precede papal elections, are still held in the Sistine Chapel even nowadays.
